Caltrain

  1. Caltrain San Jose To San Francisco

The Caltrain Business Plan is a joint effort with agency partners and communities along the corridor to develop a better understanding of the region’s future transportation needs and identify opportunities and strategies that will meet those needs. Caltrain, faced with financial ruin as it runs a near-empty commuter rail line along the Peninsula, has pinned its hopes on a November sales tax measure that would keep the system from shutting down. Caltrain San Jose To San Francisco

Taktfahrplan is German for tact schedule or more accurately regular interval timetable. In Switzerland
and other countries with intensive rail services it forms the basis for trains running at the same
minutes past the hour throughout the day making it easy for riders to memorize the timetable.
Caltrain has always been like most North American commuter rail operations with a schedule heavily
weighed toward the rush hours and far less frequent service between the peaks. With current ridership
at just 3200 a day(a 95% drop from the pre-pandemic level of 65,000) Caltrain is now completely revamping
its timetable effective Dec. 14th.
Essential workers who can't work from home make up the bulk of the remaining riders and Caltrain surveys
show them spread throughout the day with no surge during the peak hours. A new 68 train schedule has now
been adopted with a consistent 30 minute frequency. All trains will stop at the heaviest use stations
but lighter used stations will see every other train skip it resulting in a 60 minute frequency at those stops.

Trains will run every 60 minutes on the weekends(up from the present 90) and all weekend trains will
serve Tamien(as will half the weekday trains). Atherton will permanently close(last trains this weekend!).
Hillsdale remains temporarily closed with the new Hillsdale station opening early next year.
