Welcome to 6th grade and Mrs. I am thrilled to have you in my homeroom this year. I am looking forward to a fun-filled year of discovery and building our own community of readers, writers and cultural experts in ELA and Social Studies! Your journey exploring Science and Math will be with my partner teacher, Mrs.
Aleks is an interactive, adaptive program that each student has created an account for. An Initial Knowledge Check creates a personalized curriculum for each student. Each student will set up their account with my guidance. Their unique user login and password will be written in their hw organizer and should be written by their computer work space at home. The site is https://www.aleks.com/
Usually each week an Aleks assignment will be due by the following Monday. Students MUST show work in their math notebook or no credit will be given for the assignment. Students may use online resources, notes to help them if needed. They may RETAKE each assignment to correct any wrong problems for full credit. As one of my students last year said, “There’s just no excuse not to get a 100% each week!” Amelia L.
Students will be given their unique user name and set new passwords to access their online Connected/McGraw Hill Math workbook and resources as well as their Social Studies online resources. We will use the textbook online later in the year, after we complete our Geography unit. Please explore the site with your child to see all the amazing resources in English and Spanish:videos, modeled examples, self-check quizzes, etc.

Grade 6 Skills Practice
The first chapters of this story have taken us through much of grade school mathematics. Let’s now head on to advanced high school algebra. Whoa!
But here’s the thing: there is nothing to it. We’ve already done all the work.
The only thing we have to realize is that there is nothing special about a (1 leftarrow 10) machine. We could do all of grade school arithmetic in a (1 leftarrow 2) machine if we wanted to, or a (1 leftarrow 5) machine, or even a (1 leftarrow 37) machine. The math doesn’t care in which machine we do it. It is only us humans with a predilection for the number ten that draws us to the (1 leftarrow 10) machine.
Let’s now go through much of what we’ve done. But let’s now do it in all possible machines, all at once!
Sounds crazy. But it is surprisingly straightforward

Sprinkled throughout these lessons are kid videos, from Goldfish & Robin and friends, explaining the math for kids too. Here is their vision statement.
